SITE OF SERVICE:
· Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland, TX
POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:
· Degree: Master's degree in nursing.
· Education: Graduate from an academic program, approved by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA).
· Certification: Certified as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) or the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).
· Additional Certifications: Shall maintain current hands-on certifications through the AHA or ARC for the following life certifications:
• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
· Experience: Must have practiced (Clinical Competency) within the specialty within the last 2 years. Additionally, have experience in the delivery of and monitoring of all types of anesthesia.
· Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
· U.S. Citizenship: HCWs performing under this contract shall be U.S. citizens.
· English Language Requirement: Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate.
· Physical Capability: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required.
CORE DUTIES:
· Manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia, monitor and manage patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy, perform and manage invasive monitoring, and perform post-operative evaluations as privileged by the MTF Credentials Committee.
· Perform a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient. This includes obtaining an informed consent from the patient, requesting consultations and/or diagnostic studies and ordering pre-anesthetic medications.
· Develop and implement an anesthetic plan of care.
· Perform an assessment immediately prior to induction of anesthesia of the patient. This shall include a review of the medical record with regard to completeness, pertinent laboratory data, time of administration and dosage of pre-anesthesia medication, together with an appraisal of any changes in the patient's condition from that noted on previous visits. This note shall include any previous anesthetic experiences and complications thereof noted in the medical record.
· Maintain the patient's physiologic homeostasis and corrects abnormal responses to the anesthesia and/or surgery.
· Collect and interpret patient physiological data by selecting, applying or inserting noninvasive monitoring modalities.
· Manage the patient's airway and pulmonary status.
· Manage the patient's emergence and recovery from anesthesia by maintaining homeostasis, providing relief from pain and anesthesia side effects and preventing and managing complications through selecting, obtaining, ordering and administrating medications, fluids or ventilator support.
· Record all pertinent events taking place during the introduction of, maintenance of and emergence from anesthesia, including the dosage and duration of all anesthetic agents, other drugs, intravenous fluids and blood or blood components on all patients that have received anesthesia care.
· Record post-anesthetic visits, including at least one note describing the presence or absence of anesthesia related complications of the procedure.
· Manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia, monitor and manage patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy, perform and manage invasive monitoring, and perform post-operative evaluations as privileged by the credentials committee.
· Advise appropriate anesthesiologist of adverse reactions necessitating non-delegated medical decisions; take appropriate actions as directed or required.
· Assist with the training of other staff personnel to include in venipuncture and intravenous therapy, respiratory care, and anesthesia.
· Indicate responsibility for the contents and accuracy of all prepared reports/forms by affixing his/her own signature to the documents after validation.
· Attend and participate in professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities.
· Department quality improvement activities as assigned by the department chief may include, but not limited to:
o Occurrence screening checklist
o Patient care chart audits
o Special studies on quality of care within the Anesthesia Service
· Non-clinical duties will include, but is not limited to:
o Maintaining cleanliness of anesthesia work areas and equipment
o Rotation of stock and removal of supplies nearing expiration during day-to-day use
o Reviewing and updating of departmental operating instructions
o Hospital committee representation
o Orientation of personnel
HOURS:
Monday through Friday, 0700 – 1830 or until the last patient is in phase 1 recovery.
Scheduling: The schedule or scheduling process is as follows: Published as a 30-day schedule in advance; 0700 – 1830 Monday through Friday
· The total hours of routine clinic service are the equivalent of a 9-hour shift, not to exceed 40 hours per week or 80 hours per two-week period.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
